Crandall ISD Athletes Shine at Special Olympics Basketball Competition

SCURRY, TX – The spirit of "Pirate Pride" was on full display Wednesday, February 25, as students from Crandall High School, Central and Heartland Middle Schools, and the 18+ program traveled to Scurry High School for the Special Olympics Basketball Skills competition. The day began with a warm welcome from the Scurry cheerleaders, followed by an opening ceremony that set the stage for a day defined by teamwork, determination, and fun as athletes took to their competition stations.
The event highlighted the unique bond within the district’s Partner PE program, as athletes were accompanied by nondisabled peer buddies. These buddies serve as more than just teammates; they are vital anchors for inclusion within the school community. Bernard Hornsby, LIFE teacher at Heartland Middle School, noted that these peers communicate an essential message to students with physical and cognitive disabilities: "You matter, and your feelings matter." Hornsby emphasized that for many athletes, these peer interactions are the primary reason they look forward to coming to school or participating in activities like going to the gym.
"While that level of influence can feel like a significant responsibility, it is also profoundly empowering," Hornsby said, reflecting on the role of the peer buddies. "When compassionate and intentional peers step into this role, they have the opportunity to positively shape the lives of students who benefit deeply from authentic connection and encouragement." He added that the relationship is mutually beneficial, noting that "inclusion enriches everyone involved" and that every individual, regardless of ability, has something "meaningful, beautiful, and valuable to contribute."
With the basketball competition successfully concluded, the Crandall ISD team is already looking ahead to the upcoming track season. The schedule includes an upcoming meet in Sunnyvale and the highly anticipated Pirate Olympics, which will be held at home in Pirate Stadium.
