At Crandall ISD, beauty isn’t just about appearances - it’s about confidence, self-care, and community.

The district’s Cosmetology department has launched a new afterschool club, the Inner Beauty Circle, designed to help students feel beautiful inside and out. Led by Cosmetology teacher Rachel Gerlaugh, the club meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 3:30 to 5:00 PM.

While the group explores various beauty-related topics, Gerlaugh emphasizes that its primary focus is fostering inner beauty and self-confidence. “We teach beauty, right? But inner beauty is the ultimate,” she said. “It’s more important than your outer beauty, and I feel like at this age, any time they can hear that is a good thing.”

One of the club’s key benefits is its accessibility. While Crandall ISD’s Cosmetology program is limited to juniors and seniors, the Inner Beauty Circle is open to freshmen and sophomores as well, giving younger students a chance to participate in a supportive and creative environment.

Senior Itzel Verduzco, the club’s vice president, has enjoyed seeing how engaged members are each week. “I just see how excited the girls get to be here and do stuff with one another,” she said. Meetings typically start with a quote related to that day’s theme, followed by a discussion. “We tell her what the quote means to us, inner beauty and things like that,” Verduzco explained. “And then we go on and do our activity. It’s just things that make you feel better about yourself. Not everything is about how you see yourself on the outside, but on the inside. That’s what makes you beautiful.”

Club president Dephany Buenrostro believes inner beauty is just as important as outer beauty - if not more. “Because I feel like if it’s felt, it’s shown,” she said. “If you feel confident, if you know you’re beautiful, then you know that whatever you do is fine because I know I’m beautiful on the inside.”

The club has already gained strong interest, with attendance ranging from 20 to 30 students at each meeting. At a recent session, students received small bottles of hair growth oil and took turns giving each other scalp massages, reinforcing the club’s focus on self-care and personal well-being.

For students looking to build confidence, explore beauty-related topics, and connect with peers in a positive setting, the Inner Beauty Circle offers a welcoming space to grow.
