Crandall Middle School 7th Graders Launch Their Independence at JA Finance Park
Crandall Middle School 7th graders recently took an exciting step toward financial literacy by participating in JA Finance Park at the Crandall ISD JA Discovery Center. This hands-on experience gave students the opportunity to apply real-world budgeting and financial decision-making skills in an engaging and immersive setting.
Before their visit, students completed a series of in-class lessons covering topics like budgeting, credit scores, and responsible spending. Upon arrival at JA Finance Park, each student was assigned a random life scenario that included an education level, salary, and family situation. They then navigated storefronts representing major financial decisions such as housing, utilities, food, and transportation while working to provide for themselves and their families within their assigned budget.
Throughout the simulation, students explored the impact of credit scores by applying for car and home loans, making real-time financial choices, and learning how financial responsibility affects long-term stability. Guided by dedicated volunteers, students gained insight from real-world experiences, reinforcing the importance of sound financial management.
This eye-opening experience took place at the JA Discovery Center, located at the Rayne Education Center in Crandall, which is the first JA Discovery Center in Texas. Serving students from fourth through twelfth grade, the center offers innovative, hands-on learning opportunities that bring education to life. Generously sponsored by the Heartland Education Foundation, the JA Discovery Center ensures students receive impactful lessons that will help shape their futures.
Crandall Middle School students left JA Finance Park with a greater understanding of personal finance, a newfound appreciation for budgeting, and a glimpse into the financial responsibilities they will one day face. This experience aligns with Crandall ISD’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond the classroom, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions in the future.
