Crandall ISD Election Update: Voters Turn Down Crandall ISD School Funding Proposition
Crandall ISD voters have not approved the proposed School Funding Election (VATRE or Prop A) to grant the district access to additional funds that would have provided crucial financial support for the district's operating budget. The estimated revenue from the local tax base would have brought $2.5 million to CISD and an additional $3.5 million in state funds that the school district cannot access without voter approval. This added revenue was projected to help mitigate a significant budget shortfall and support staff and essential programs.
According to preliminary results, which the Crandall ISD Board of Trustees will confirm, a substantial number of voters turned out, with a final vote count of 5,096 For and 5,963 Against the proposition. "We are thankful for the record number of voters who participated in the democratic process. While we are deeply disappointed with the outcome, we remain undeterred in our mission," shared Superintendent Dr. Anjanette Murry. "As proud Pirates, we will keep doing the work that matters—staying focused on our students. We will continue to appeal to the state for essential funding and fight for every resource our kids need to succeed."
In an email to staff, Dr. Murry stated, “The Board of Trustees and I were in pursuit of a possible revenue source that did not garner enough support to remain a viable option. I want to assure you that our commitment has not changed and we remain steadfast to do all we can to provide increased salaries for staff, improved curriculum resources and maintain safe and secure schools.”
Dr. Murry added, "We will continue to explore all options to secure additional funding for Crandall ISD. We will continue advocating to our state representatives and legislators to increase public school funding. We will continue fighting to provide the best possible resources to our staff and students."
The district has already implemented cost-saving measures, including adjusting teacher-to-student ratios and reducing certain operational expenses. These changes and continued budget constraints may result in further adjustments if additional funding cannot be secured.
As part of our commitment to transparency and responsible stewardship, Crandall ISD will continue advocating for increased financial support from the state and focusing on what matters most: providing a high-quality education for every student. The challenges are real, but as Dr. Murry emphasized, "Our commitment is to the students of Crandall ISD, and we will continue to fight for them!"
