Happy Sunday afternoon, Pirates. It's great to be with you. I wanted to spend a couple of minutes reminding you of a few upcoming things, and first of all to say thank you for your patience. I know this last week was a bit challenging with weather and school closures.

Before we get any further, I want to spend a couple of minutes discussing how these decisions are made. Every afternoon, when inclement weather looks likely, we attend a briefing with the National Weather Service, which pinpoints Crandall ISD and provides a very specific forecast for our district. Based on that information, and considering about 50% of our staff who travel from outside Crandall neighborhoods, as well as monitoring surrounding districts, we make our decisions. We appreciate your patience in this process.

Currently, we are not scheduled to make up any additional days. The two days missed so far have been covered by the extra instructional minutes built into our calendar. However, if we have more school closures—since winter is really just beginning—there will be makeup days. Those dates are already indicated on your calendar, and we’ll communicate more if additional bad weather days are used. Thank you for your patience and support.

Moving on from the weather: students have no school tomorrow in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We encourage you to spend tomorrow in service or reflection on the life and impact of Dr. King over the last several decades.

Lastly, at our board meeting last Monday, we began sharing important information about rezoning and grade restructuring within our district. As we grow quickly, housing and labor markets don’t slow down for holidays or bad weather, and new homes continue to be built. Because of this growth, we must make some changes to our elementary and middle school boundaries, as well as adjust some grade spans.

We invite you to two upcoming meetings where we’ll listen to your input. The first is on January 22 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Noble Reed Elementary, covering rezoning and grade-span restructuring. The second is on January 23 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. here at the central office.

Finally, I want to express a huge thank you to our seven board members. January is Board Appreciation Month, and these volunteers tirelessly give their time to support our students and our district. We are incredibly grateful for their leadership and dedication.

Happy Board Appreciation Month, and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday. Have a great rest of your weekend!
