Chromebook Support

The Chromebook is a cost-effective laptop computer that supports collaboration, communication, engagement, and personalization between students and their teachers. Chromebooks have a long battery life and are efficiently managed in large numbers. These devices will seamlessly connect to student Google accounts, which are already in use and managed by the district. Because Chromebooks rely on web-based software, the district is not tied to this device for the long-term. If a better or less expensive device emerges in the future, the district will be able to migrate to it easily without losing student work or sacrificing the investment in teacher professional development.  

Click on the Wi-Fi icon on the lower left of the Chromebook to see a list of available networks. Click on the name of the network that you wish to connect to and then enter the Wi-Fi password (if it is password protected)). • Students in grades 9-12 will bring the Chromebook to school every day fully charged.
• Students will protect the device from damage, defacement, and will not leave it unattended.
• Students will practice responsible digital citizenship at all times.
• Students must remember that they should not give their device to others to use.
• Students may be responsible for any inappropriate content viewed on the device and any damage that may occur.

While battery time will vary depending on what you are doing, in general Chromebooks have exceptional battery length. When fully charged a Chromebook should last the entire school day. Student Chromebooks need to be charged nightly so they are ready for the next day at school.

The district’s network is filtered and each computer’s internet access is logged and can be reviewed. Crandall ISD follows (and may exceed) federal and local guidelines that require filtering of inappropriate material. In addition, student Google accounts are managed by school and district administrators and can be accessed at any time if needed.

The District utilizes an Internet content filter that complies with the federally mandated Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). All Chromebooks, regardless of physical location (in or out of school) and Internet connection, will have Internet activity filtered. Despite the filter, the District cannot guarantee that all controversial or inappropriate materials will be blocked. Parental monitoring of student Chromebook use at home is encouraged.

• If a student has any issues (will not work, damaged, lost/stolen) with the Chromebook they should stop in the media center of the building they attend and check in with teh librarian or aide for support.  They will be able to assist/schedule assistance for the student with the issues that they are experiencing.
• As with any piece of school property checked out to a student, families are responsible for appropriate use while it is in the student’s possession.. Much like a textbook that student borrows, a Chromebook belongs to Crandall ISD. Each device is assigned to that student at the time of distribution. If a device is stolen it will not work outside our district’s Google Apps environment. If a Chromebook is damaged, destroyed, lost or stolen, it will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Damage or loss of device due to negligence and/or repeated incidents may require a student’s family to pay for repair or replacement.
• Crandall ISD follows the Texas Education Code section 31.104(d) [that] places responsibility of the condition of instructional material and technological equipment on a student or the student’s parent or guardian. If the items are not returned to the district in an acceptable condition, the student will lose the right to free instructional materials and the technological equipment until the student or the student’s guardian pay for the damaged or unreturned items.
• All students are expected to bring a fully charged Chromebook to school each day.
• Payment for replacement of a damaged district device can be made at your campus, or at the Administration Building, 400 W. Lewis, Crandall, Texas 75114. Accepted forms of payment include cash, money order, or cashier’s check payable to Crandall ISD.

Your Chromebook automatically checks for and downloads updates when it is turned on with the lid open and connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Chrome OS will get updates periodically, so it is important to have the most updated operating system to ensure that applications work the way they are intended. Leaving your Chromebook plugged into power with the lid open overnight will help make sure that any updates needed can run overnight so your machine is ready to use first thing in the morning. If you are having trouble with your Chromebook, checking to see if it has the most updated Chrome OS is the best place to start your troubleshooting. It can affect the performance of many different apps and extensions.

1. Turn on your Chromebook and make sure that it is open.
2. Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi. (Linked help)
3. At the bottom right, select the time.
4. Select Settings .
5. At the bottom of the left panel, select About Chrome OS.
6. Under "Google Chrome OS," you'll find which version of the Chrome operating system your Chromebook uses.
7. Select Check for updates.
8. If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.
9. After updating, it may ask for you to restart your Chromebook.

Some models of Chromebooks the District distributed could encounter a critical update message. This could take up to 2-3 hours (depending on the strength and speed of your Wi-Fi) for your device to receive this critical update. If you receive this message, do not shut down or restart your Chromebook! Wait until the Chromebook screen messages you that the update is complete. If you did restart your computer or shut it down during the critical update, you will need to contact the campus to schedule a time for you to bring your Chromebook back to the campus to be repaired.

2. At the top right, click More .
3. Click History  History.
