Section 504

Section 504, which is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, prohibits discrimination based on disability. This civil rights statute mandates that the needs of a student with a disability be as adequately met as the needs of his/her non-disabled peers.

In order to be eligible for a Section 504 plan a student must:
1) have a physical or mental impairment/disability,
2) that substantially limits one or more major life activities, AND
3) has the need for accommodations, services or modifications to policies in order to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE).

Parents may request a Section 504 evaluation verbally or in writing.  Please contact your student’s teacher or the school counselor if you would like to request an evaluation for your student.
