Abbott announces schools will not reopen for 2019-20 school year

April 17, 2020

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced during a news conference today that all schools in the state must remain closed for the remainder of the school year. Classes in Crandall ISD will continue online for the remainder of the year through CISD HOMEroom.

Abbott sited medical advisement indicating that it would be unsafe to allow people to gather at schools at this time.

“Today's executive order [also] addresses schools,” Abbott said. “The team of doctors advising us have determined that it would be unsafe to allow students to gather in schools for the foreseeable future. As a result, school classrooms are closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.”

The order includes, all public, private and higher education institutions.

CISD officials are working to develop a plan for parents, students and staff to safely collect personal belongings from the campus and return school-issued supplies, including technology.

The Texas Education Agency will provide guidance on how to best conduct graduation ceremonies. That information will also be shared as soon as possible.
