Every year the STARS students are encouraged to do something good for others by providing for a need within our community. Our community can include area shelters, nursing homes, or needy families. The STARS made the decision earlier this year to participate in a Holiday Gift Box project. The goal was to fill empty shoe boxes with gifts that were requested by area shelters.
The local shelters were contacted and asked for a needs/wish list. A letter was given to the students which included the list, and soon after they began to bring in the requested items. When the deadline arrived, the students had collected enough items to fill 24 boxes (some were bigger than shoe box size) and 4 large Christmas gift bags with the gifts. There were also bulk items that were too big for a box or bag that were taken to the shelter as well. The Stars students were then asked to make a decision as to which shelter they would like to take the donated items. to. The students decided on The Genesis Center in Kaufman, TX.
On Friday December the 11, 2009 the “Gift Boxes” were delivered along with a monetary donation offered by the Alternative Center Staff.
We are extremely proud of the efforts that the STARS students put forth in making this project a success.
